The Client

Amarra: Formal and Occasion Wear for Every Milestone Moment

Amarra designs and retails formal gowns, prom dresses, and occasion wear sold through boutiques and DTC channels globally. The brand operates in a fashion category where the purchase journey has shifted dramatically toward AI-assisted discovery. Consumers shopping for prom, black tie, homecoming, or wedding guest dressing increasingly begin by asking an AI what to wear, what styles suit their body type, or which brands carry the silhouette they have in mind. The brands named in those responses are introduced at the highest-intent point in the fashion discovery funnel, before a single product page has been visited.

THE CHALLENGE

A Well-Known Brand Getting Overlooked by AI

Undermentioned Across Style and Occasion Queries

Amarra had genuine brand recognition in the formalwear market, but that recognition was not translating into AI mentions. When consumers asked LLMs for prom dress recommendations, formal gown suggestions, or occasion wear ideas, the responses were populated by brands with stronger AI mention histories rather than brands with the strongest product range. Amarra was present in the market but absent from the recommendation layer.

Low AI Visibility Score Relative to Category Size

Amarra entered the campaign with an AI visibility score of 21 out of 100. In a category as large and commercially active as formal fashion, a score at that level means the brand is structurally absent from the AI recommendation layer for the majority of consumer queries in its own niche. Competing for occasion wear share of voice without fixing that structural gap was a losing position.

Formal Fashion Queries Are Highly Fragmented

Occasion wear purchase intent is not a single query. It fragments across event type, silhouette, colour, size range, formality level, price point, and season. A brand that is not represented across that full query landscape is invisible to the majority of consumers actively shopping for its products, regardless of how strong its catalogue or creative direction is.

Fashion Editorial Cycles Create a Citation Gap

The formal fashion category is served by a dense editorial ecosystem of style publications, trend roundups, and occasion-specific guides. Brands with long-standing relationships in that ecosystem had accumulated citation mass over years. Amarra needed a structured programme to accelerate its editorial citation presence without waiting for organic coverage cycles to close the gap.

Our Approach

GEO for Formal Fashion: Building the Mention Presence That Gets Amarra Named First

Our strategy for Amarra was built on one insight: in formal fashion, AI mentions are driven by occasion and style query coverage. Consumers are not asking AI about brands in the abstract. They are asking what to wear to a specific event, in a specific silhouette, in a specific season. We focused on building Amarra’s presence across every major occasion and style cluster where it had relevant inventory but no AI mention footprint.

Occasion and Style Intent Mapping

We mapped the AI query landscape across formal fashion intent clusters: prom, black tie, homecoming, cocktail, wedding guest, gala, and body-type-specific style queries. Each cluster was assessed for AI mention volume and Amarra’s existing coverage. The result was a prioritised gap list that told us exactly which occasion and style intents to target first for the highest mention velocity with the least competitive friction.

Occasion-Specific Content Built to Be Named

We built structured, occasion-first content across every priority intent cluster: specific style guidance, silhouette recommendations, and product-level detail that gives AI systems a reason to name Amarra as a direct answer to a consumer style question. Each page was designed around the query structure AI uses to form a fashion recommendation, not around the editorial formats traditional style content follows.

Editorial Placement Across Fashion and Style Verticals

We identified the editorial properties in the formal fashion and occasion wear vertical that AI platforms draw from most heavily when answering style queries, and executed a targeted placement programme to earn Amarra citations across them. Priority went to properties with demonstrated influence on AI mention outputs in the prom, gala, and formal dress categories, accelerating the citation accumulation that would have taken years through organic editorial cycles alone.

Actionable Insights

What Formal Fashion Brands Can Learn From This Campaign

Fashion AI Mentions Are Occasion-Driven

When a consumer asks an AI what to wear to prom, a black tie event, or a formal gala, the response names brands that have a documented presence across those specific occasion intents. Fashion AI mentions are not generated by broad brand awareness. They are generated by occasion-specific content coverage that gives AI systems a direct reason to name a brand in response to a specific style query.

Query Fragmentation Is a Volume Opportunity

Formal fashion intent fragments across dozens of occasion types, silhouettes, size ranges, and seasonal contexts. Each fragment is a separate AI query cluster. Brands that build coverage across a wide range of those clusters earn mentions across all of them. The compounding effect of broad occasion coverage is that a brand becomes the default answer to far more consumer questions than any single competitor optimising for a narrow style niche.

AI Introductions Happen Before the Product Page

AI Introductions Happen Before the Product Page

A consumer asking an AI for prom dress recommendations has not yet visited any brand website. The brand named in that response is introduced before a single product page, ad impression, or social post has been seen. For formal fashion, which is a considered purchase driven by strong brand preference at point of decision, being the brand named by AI at the research stage is a significant conversion advantage that paid channels cannot replicate.

GEO Accelerates What Editorial Cycles Make Slow

Organic editorial coverage in formal fashion accumulates over years through seasonal roundups, style guide placements, and trend features. A structured GEO programme compresses that accumulation by targeting the specific editorial properties and content formats that AI systems demonstrably cite when answering occasion wear queries. Brands that wait for organic coverage to close the AI mention gap are ceding ground to competitors who are not waiting.
